Gaspar Noé asks if ‘America is turning so stupid’ Marvel must ‘represent their minds’

Director Gaspar Noé criticizes marvel

Director Gaspar Noé has harshly criticised Marvel films, questioning whether they are "stupidifying" audiences.

In a new interview with The Independent, the celebrated French-Argentine filmmaker, best known for his 2002 film Irreversible starring Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel, discussed current filmmaking.

"It's like the question, did Hitler create Nazi Germany or did Nazi Germany create Hitler? Noé stated."

Do you believe that the Marvel movies are making Americans stupid, or that America as a whole is becoming so stupid that such stupid movies are needed to represent their minds?"

Noé is a controversial filmmaker who received backlash for presenting a rape scene in his film Irreversible that lasted over ten minutes.

Noé also discussed the recent success of his 2015 film Love, which drew massive numbers on Netflix when it was reintroduced to the streaming service in 2020.

"The audience is made up of humans who need to masturbate," Noé said of the film's success during lockdown. Many moments of unsimulated sex may be found in the film Love.

Noé isn't the only filmmaker to criticise superhero films; Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather, called them "despicable."

Martin Scorsese previously stated that he "tried" to watch MCU films but later realised that they are "not cinema." Instead, he compared them to "theme parks."

Scorsese explained, "It isn't the film of human beings trying to impart emotional, psychological sensations to another human being."

Critics have praised Noé's recently released picture Vortex, which is about an old couple in Paris nearing the end of their life.
