Ms. Marvel Star Iman Vellani Calls Shah Rukh Khan’s DDLJ ‘Sexist’ and ‘Outdated’
Ms. Marvel has been tearing it up since the debut episode of Marvel's newest superhero was released on Disney+ last week.
The show is set in New Jersey and follows Pakistani-American girl Kamala Khan, who is played by the energetic Iman Vellan. The character is a first for Marvel, as it is the first superhero film to feature a character with South Asian roots.
Along with all of the heroic antics, the show looks into the lives of South Asians in North America, with plenty of cultural representation. As a result, the first episode of the series was jam-packed with Bollywood movie and song references.

And no one in Bollywood is more well-known than Shah Rukh Khan, aka the Baadshah. Vellani discussed her admiration for Bollywood's King in a recent interview. She does, however, have one problematic point to make about Khan's filmography.

In an interview with the BBC Asian Network, Vellani and her co-star Rishi Shah, who plays Kamran, admitted that they aren't fans of Khan's most popular film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, or DDLJ.
"Okay, I hate DDLJ. I shouldn’t say hate, as that’s a very strong word. Watch it again. It’s really outdated, and a little sexist. Shah Rukh Khan is not attractive in that one at all."
While she isn't a huge fan of DDLJ, Vellani did admit that she and Rishi had similar tastes in terms of their favourite Shah Rukh Khan film, Ra.One, which was released in 2011. At the same time, she joked that by slandering one of the biggest Bollywood hits in DDLJ, she might have impacted her show's ratings.
"I think I've just lost our entire Bollywood audience."
