The Incredible Hulk’s Lou Ferrigno believes the MCU's CGI Hero has lost an Important Quality
The Incredible Hulk's Lou Ferrigno discusses the flaws of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's pixel-powered rendition of the Jade Giant.
Lou Ferrigno, star of The Incredible Hulk, has spoken out about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's all-CGI version of Bruce Banner's renowned alter-ego, claiming that it lacks one key element.
In an interview with The Washington Times, former professional bodybuilder Ferringo, who played Bruce Banner's musclebound transformation in the 1978 CBS TV series, discussed his pixel-powered substitute. "Though I appreciate the amazing visual work these [visual effects] artists are producing, it's missing the raw human performance qualities that I believe only an actor can play," he remarked. "Especially when it comes to The Hulk," says the narrator.
Ferringo played The Hulk in all five seasons of the Incredible Hulk show, as well as the five made-for-TV movies that followed it, partnering Bill Bixby's Banner. In 2003's Hulk and its 2008 MCU revival The Incredible Hulk, the character was digitally generated, with Ferringo supplying the Jade Giant's vocal performance in the latter. In both films, the actor had a brief cameo appearance as a security guard. Since 2012's The Avengers, Mark Ruffalo has played Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, providing the Hulk's vocals in both live-action and animated appearances.
Ruffalo will next appear in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a new Disney+ series starring Tatiana Maslany as Bruce Banner's cousin Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. CGI in She-Hulk has also been criticized, with some fans agreeing with Ferringo that the show should have used practical effects to bring its lead character to life. Others drew negative parallels between the all-digital She-Hulk and Gamora, who is played by actress Zoe Saldaa in full-body green makeup and minor facial prosthetics in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Disney+ has since released a high-resolution version of the She-Hulk teaser, which appears to address many of the visual effects issues raised against the show. Better-defined facial features, improved skin textures, tonal variation, and updated lighting and related effects are among the visible improvements to She-CG Hulk's model. The emerald-skinned superhero even has apparent skin pores, which were either hard to see in the low-res version or added to coincide with the publication of the higher-quality version.
Fans, on the other hand, appear to be less concerned with the visual effects employed to portray She-Hulk nemesis The Abomination, who is once again played by Ferrigno's Incredible Hulk co-star Tim Roth in human form. The Abomination appears to have the same enhanced, comics-accurate redesign as his brief presence in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was only shown briefly in the trailer.
