Chris Evans is Open to Reprising his Role as Human Torch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Chris Evans says he's more excited about the prospect of restoring Human Torch in the MCU than he is about resurrecting Steve Rogers.

Chris Evans as Human Torch

Chris Evans may make a cameo appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not as Steve Rogers. Evans had, after all, spent a lot of time in the MCU, including starring in three of his own Captain America films. He has subsequently withdrawn from the role of Steve Rogers, with Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) set to take over as the new shield wielder in Captain America 4.

Evans may believe he's done everything he can with Captain America, but he hasn't ruled out a return to the MCU. Evans reflected on his superhero movie work in a recent interview with MTV News to help promote Lightyear. He was asked if he would consider reprising his role as Johnny Storm, or the Human Torch, from the Fantastic Four films. Evans was intrigued by the notion and stated that he would be willing to consider it, much more so than returning as Steve Rogers.

"Wouldn't that be great? No, no one's ever come to me about that. I mean, I don't exactly look the same anymore. That was 15, almost 20 years ago. But I do love that character… Yeah, look, I would love it! I would love it. That would actually be an easier sell to me than coming back as Cap. You know, Cap is so precious to me, and I almost don't want to disrupt what a beautiful experience that was. But, Johnny Storm, I feel like he really didn't get his day. That was before Marvel really found its footing. I really love that role, so, who knows."

Chris Evans hasn't ruled out a Captain America comeback completely

While Chris Evans has no plans to return his Captain America role anytime soon, he hasn't completely slammed the door and thrown away the key. Evans had stated in a recent interview with ComicBook.com that he was hesitant to return to the part, and that the only thing that could persuade him to do so would be a "great" idea. He simply believes that the character was given a fantastic send-off, and that resurrecting him in another film or series would taint the legacy of his Steve Rogers story.

"That appears to be something that people want to see. I don't want to let anyone down, yet it's difficult... It was a fantastic run, and I'm overjoyed. It's quite valuable to me. It'd have to be flawless. It would simply be terrifying to shake something so precious to me. That part is extremely important to me. It would be a tall order to revisit it."

Who knows if Evans will return to the MCU in the future, whether as Johnny Storm or Steve Rogers. Fans will soon be able to see Evans in his new film, The Gray Man, which will be released on Netflix on July 22. Evans is most known for his role as Buzz Lightyear in the new animated film Lightyear, which is currently in theatres.
