Iman Vellani Reacts to Ms. Marvel Trolling and Review Bombing: 'It’s Laughable'

Ms Marvel

Even if Loki and WandaVision were beaten by Ms. Marvel for the title of most critically acclaimed Disney+ MCU show, the show's viewer rating on sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb is unexpectedly low. While it's true that occasionally audiences don't connect with films that critics adore, Ms. Marvel is in no way in that category because it's truly pretty terrific and well-made. The show is a victim of review bombing, and Ms. Marvel received a lot of criticism even before it debuted.

Iman Vellani plays Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, a Pakistani-American teen who acquires abilities thanks to a magical bangle. The series and its lead actress, Vellani, are the targets of internet trolls despite the fact that they have a lot in common with the character, including being Muslim and a die-hard Marvel fan.

One day it's because Marvel is imposing diversity or promoting a woke agenda, and the next it's because Kamala Khan's abilities are being changed. The accomplishments of Ms. Marvel are being overshadowed by baseless, venomous criticism, but Vellani is wise enough not to listen to trolls. Vellani acknowledged the harsh feedback in a recent interview with NME, but she knows she connected with the correct audience and is delighted to portray a heroine from an underserved culture.

"I know they're there. It's something we knew was going to happen going into this. It happened when the comic books came out in 2014. I'm all for constructive criticism as long as people have a legitimate concern or suggestion or something real. Then I care. But all the hatred I've seen has no basis, no merit, it's just purely for the sake of hating - and that's fine. You're not gonna impress everyone. We hit our target audience and we hit an entirely new audience that didn't know they were gonna fall in love with this character - people who have never seen themselves represented in a positive light before."

When it comes to review bombing, it has previously impacted Moon Knight due to its mention of the Armenian Genocide. Following misogynistic criticism of Brie Larson in 2019, Captain Marvel likewise faced a similar fate but went on to gross over $1.1 billion globally. Fortunately, Vellani doesn't use social media and is not aware of the hate speech thrown at her and Ms. Marvel, but she finds it amusing anyway.

"I'm not on social media. I hear things that my mother tells me though. It's honestly quite laughable and I think change is scary for a lot of people. And having a show that surrounds a 16-year-old girl who's Pakistani and Muslim and a superhero is scary for a lot of people. I think this is just gonna rip the Band Aid off and hopefully people will fall in love with her."

In The Marvels, Iman Vellani will reprise her role as Ms. Marvel

The Marvels

Iman Vellani has drawn plaudits for her imposing on-screen persona and portrayal of Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, and she will be back to astonish the audience once more in The Marvels. The movie, a follow-up to Captain Marvel from 2019, stars Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Brie Larson as Carol Danvers.
