Marvel Producer Confirms Who Will Replace Nick Fury as MCU Leader

Nick Fury

One of the first components of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's world-building process was Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. The character, who debuted in Iron Man, later appeared in a number of other films as he brought the Avengers together for the first time. While Fury will next appear in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, it appears that Val, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, has mastered the art of assembling her own crew.

She approached Wyatt Russell's U.S. Agent following his terrible international incident in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which was the character's debut appearance. Despite this, Val seems very certain that he will be involved in whatever it is that she is piecing together.

What's her problem, then? Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has at least acknowledged that "she looks to be in recruitment mode," but for what? And in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, might she be taking up Nick Fury's previous role?

She made her first appearance in a new artbook for Anthony Mackie's most recent series, and now a major Marvel executive has commented on just that.

Nate Moore, the executive producer of Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, spoke about Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Val and her role in the MCU in the recently released book, Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Art of the Series.

When it came to choosing Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the role of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Moore observed that "when [they] thought of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, there was a fun energy to her,” one which helped make her “not the same as Nick Fury:”

“The Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is a character that has a rich publication history… and to some degree, figuring out who can fill those shoes, which in our mind is in a way taking the reins from Nick Fury, was tough. But when we thought of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, there was a fun energy to her that immediately you realize this person has a weight and a gravity, but they’re not the same as Nick Fury. It’s a completely different energy.”

Val is intended to be "a new leader... in the Marvel Cinematic Universe," the producer reaffirmed:

“There’s a snark to the character that I think sets her apart from what’s come before. And yet you still feel like she commands the room. So if you’re talking about a new leader, to some degree, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we were very lucky to find Julia Louis-Dreyfus.”

What Results Will Val's Leadership Produce?

So what is Val doing exactly? Well, the recently revealed Thunderbolts project would be the natural response. While there are currently no specifics regarding the project, it's possible that John Walker, Yelena Belova, Zemo, and other actors may join their own band of merry supers in this The Suicide Squad-like adventure.

But how does it all relate to Nick Fury and his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Even Samuel L. Jackson is a little perplexed by how frequently his character has been missing from the action lately.

Fans are unsure of how his upcoming adventure, Secret Invasion, will turn out, but could it conclude with Fury earning a comfortable post in space? He might be compelled to return to Earth when he finds out about Val's filthy antics.

Disney+ currently has The Falcon and the Winter Soldier available for streaming, and Secret Invasion will probably arrive at the start of 2023.
