Thor Love and Thunder: Director Taika Waititi Reveals Jane Foster’s ‘Mighty Thor’ Fighting Style

Thor: Love and Thunder Jane Foster

Marvel Studios is putting the last touches on filmmaker Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder, the second of three MCU films set to hit theatres this year. The MCU now has a fascinating new story to tackle on Earth and throughout the cosmos, with both Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman's heroes taking up the mantle of Thor.

After a nine-year absence, the studio has finally released the second full trailer for Thor 4, offering fans a taste of what Portman will be up to now that she's proven herself worthy of wielding Mjolnir. Even though this does not imply that Jane will permanently assume the role of Thor, her impact will be felt immediately as she reunites with her ex-boyfriend in this new standalone drama.

Of course, just because two characters share the same mantle doesn't imply they'll battle in the same method, which goes beyond Hemsworth's Stormbreaker hero and Portman's Mjolnir worth. The sequel's director recently revealed more information about how those variances will make each hero distinct in their own manner.

Director Taika Waititi described how Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman's Thors differ in terms of fighting tactics in the latest issue of Total Film.

Waititi spoke for millions Marvel fans when he said that Jane Foster's Thor is "really cool":

"She's towards the top. Anyone who has read those comics knows how awesome Mighty Thor is."

Portman's fighting style has "a feeling of ballet when she fights," according to the director. While they aren't quite like Hemsworth's original Thor, Waititi hailed them as "awesome" in their own right:

"The fighting style differs significantly from Thor's. You have to play to people's strengths, because Natalie clearly dances and has done ballet and other things. When she fights, it has a dance-like air to it. It's quite precise and fluid. She's cool, but not in the same way that Chris is. He employs brute strength..."

As Thor, Portman brings her own unique style to the role

Given how different Jane Foster and Thor have become during their MCU journeys, it's only natural that Jane's fighting style would differ from what fans have seen with Chris Hemsworth for more than a decade. While Hemsworth's Thor fights are mostly based on his height and power, Natalie Portman's Thor will bring something fresh to the table with the dance style of fighting outlined by Waititi in his statements. Jane also demonstrated some fairly handy talents with Mjolnir as the fractured shards dispersed and brought down her adversaries in the second trailer, even if she is now more bulked up for her new position.

When Thor 4 is released in its entirety, more of these changes will be underlined, but anticipation is already rising to see what Portman's new version of Jane Foster will accomplish with her new god-like abilities. Add in a tense relationship with Mjolnir's former wielder and a personal struggle with cancer, and you've got yourself a compelling story, both from an action and emotional angle.
