When will the X-Men and Fantastic Four join the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Fans wanting to see John Krasinski confirmed as the next Reed Richards after his excellent cameo as Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness got some bad news this week. According to Deadline's Justin Kroll, Marvel is still looking for a director for its Fantastic Four reboot, which means casting news could take a long. According to the Hollywood trade journalist, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige wants to find a film director with the credibility and accolades to handle the production without too much Marvel involvement, similar to what Sam Raimi did with Madness.

Krasinski has the appropriate mix of muscle and brains to play Richards, who is not only the toughest but also the smartest superhero in the comics. However, his appearance in Raimi's film does not ensure that he will appear again: the version we saw in Multiverse of Madness was from a different reality. Mister Fantastic was sliced and diced by Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch like he was made of plasticine, and there's no going back for him.We may learn in the future that Krasinski's appearance was a deceptive false dawn fueled by fans' desire to see the actor link up with his real-life wife Emily Blunt as Richards and Susan Storm, AKA the Invisible Woman. Perhaps the more important question is why Marvel is taking so long to integrate the Fantastic Four into the MCU. So, what's the hold-up here?

Since Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, the studio has been able to bring all Marvel superheroes previously owned by its competitor studio (in terms of big-screen rights) into the fold. But it hasn't gotten around to it yet, with the exception of the alternate versions we saw in Multiverse of Madness, which contained Patrick Stewart's Professor X. Apart from this brief appearance, Xavier's X-Men are still missing from the MCU, which means we have no idea who the next Jean Grey will be, let alone how the MCU will handle characters like Storm, Rogue, Beast, or Wolverine. In a recent interview, Karl Urban, who many fans would love to see play the adamantium-clawed mutant, ruled himself out, stating he's too elderly to be a long-term possibility. So, when will Marvel get around to recasting all of these characters?

Those who are impatient should remember why the MCU has been so successful over the course of its 28-movie run. Rather than hurriedly introducing new superheroes into the fray every five minutes without properly acclimating spectators to them, the studio has thoughtfully presented all of its major players over time. Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor all had their own films first, but other heroes, like Spider-Man, were given cameos before receiving their own. Marvel may have created a world where aliens can finger-snap half of the known galaxy into oblivion, but it rarely takes its fans for granted by introducing characters who aren't fully established.

When it comes to presenting the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, the studio's difficulty is figuring out how to explain their absence from the main Marvel universe up to this point. The arrival of the Multiverse provided the ideal solution: they just existed in other worlds. Perhaps one of these resembled the Fox flicks in appearance.

There are additional advantages as well. We wouldn't need to see the Fantastic Four's clichéd origins story for the eighth time if they arrived from another world. If Wolverine follows suit, Marvel won't have to explain why the Weapon X programme was never publicised previously. And the majority of fans will be perfectly pleased to believe that these genesis stories still exist somewhere out there in another, distant, half-remembered reality.

How will we know if the Fantastic Four and X-Men will be fully formed in the MCU or if they will spill over from other universes? If alternate realities continue to clash and fuse in films like Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, all of which are set to hit theatres in the next 12 months, there's a good chance Marvel will continue to use all of the tools at its disposal when it comes to introducing new characters.

And if our heroes end up in a universe where everyone swears a lot and the body count appears to be significantly higher than usual, don't be surprised if there's a certain potty-mouthed, self-healing mutant lurking in a dark corner just waiting to experience the joy of inter-dimensional chimichangas.
