Marvel Confirmed Next Villian after Thanos

No villain was more prominent than Josh Brolin's Thanos throughout the first 11 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes the 23 films known as the Infinity Saga. The Mad Titan, who appeared in five of the films, became the villain of all villains as he unleashed hell on Earth and every other world in the universe.

In 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame, Brolin played Thanos, who gathered the six Infinity Stones and used them to wipe out half of the universe's inhabitants before attempting to wipe out the entire population. Even after Iron Man and the Avengers vanquished him and his army, his influence continues to loom over the MCU and its future as Phase 4 unfolds.

After Thanos died at the end of Phase 3, the big question today is who will take his place as the MCU's main villain. Looking ahead to what could be the next major challenge, one of the MCU's best screenwriters has offered his predictions for what the MCU's heroes will face in the coming years.

Marvel Writer on the MCU's Post-Thanos Big Bad

Michael Waldron, author of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, spoke with Murphy's Multiverse on the challenges that await the MCU in Phase 4.

When "the MCU first turned cosmic" roughly a decade ago, Thanos was a menace, according to Waldron. Now, in the shape of and "Incursions," the MCU's new crop of heroes will face a "Multiversal menace." "And there's the threat," Waldron says. It's out there, and it's out there now. A Multiversal danger exists. When the MCU first became cosmic, there was the threat of Thanos, just as there was when the MCU first went cosmic many years ago. You're definitely laying up some Multiversal threats on the board right now.

It doesn't matter if it's Kang or Incursions. It will be fascinating to see how everything comes together."

Who Is the Next Big Threat to the MCU?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness spoilers follow.

Doctor Strange 2 surely accomplishes the same for Multiversal dangers from other dimensions in Phase 4 and beyond, just as The Avengers did for more cosmic characters and stories in the MCU. Now that Doctor Strange is learning about what the Darkhold did to him while Clea transports him back to the Dark Dimension, it begs the issue of who will be the Avengers' and Earth-616's next true threat after Thanos.

Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror, who was first revealed in Loki before finally unleashing his terror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, appears in the near future. His mastery of time travel and the Multiverse makes him a strong contender for the top villain role, especially because Ant-Man 3 will most likely not be the last time fans see him in action.

Furthermore, Doctor Strange 2 opens the door to some yet-to-be revealed Incursion-based mayhem, as well as a possible return for Dormammu, who last made his mark bartering with Strange in his first solo film.

With Clea now playing a crucial role in the MCU's future, which is likely to include the rumoured Doctor Strange 3, the Avengers and other heroes may be in for a lot more than just the Infinity Gauntlet and a gigantic extraterrestrial in the next battle.

Thanos may be only the beginning of some huge themes that the Avengers will confront as the post-Infinity Saga MCU grows bigger, whether it's Dormammu, Kang, or someone else when Avengers 5 hits theatres.
