Jake Tapper Doesn't Think Ryan Reynolds Should Have Been Allowed to Play Deadpool

Some actors have been inextricably linked to one movie universe, to the point where they would feel out of place in another. For example, it's difficult to see Gal Gadot in the MCU, and it's nearly impossible to see Robert Downey Jr. as a DC hero. However, a few actors have succeeded in making the transition. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, for example, played Killer Croc in Suicide Squad and Algrim in Thor: The Dark World, while Josh Brolin portrayed Cable in the franchise as well as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

However, CNN correspondent Jake Tapper has taken a firm stance against any such crossings. In an interview, Tapper examined the present condition of superhero films in depth, stating that performers should choose between Marvel and DC and stick to one of them out of principle.

"I believe that if you are in the Marvel Universe, you must have the ethics and the strength not to then walk into the DC Universe as an actor, and both," he said. It's impossible to be J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker's boss, and then be Commissioner Gordon for Batman. You're not going to be able to do it, Simmons. It's not fair! You can't do it! You can't be one of Aquaman's nasty gremlin fish-men, then turn around and battle Spider-Man as the Green Gobin. Affleck, you can't be Daredevil and Batman at the same time. You must choose one. I'm an unabashed Affleck supporter. I don't give a damn what anyone says. And he's fantastic as Batman, but he was Daredevil first."

When Tapper questioned if his role as Hal Jordan in Green Lantern meant he shouldn't have played Deadpool, Reynolds said,

"Yes." I believe that one must make sacrifices for the sake of principle. That's what principles are; you stick to them even though it's inconvenient at times. You, for example, respect democracy even if your candidate loses."

Tapper isn't quite right here, as I'm sure some of you are aware. First and foremost, Green Lantern was released in 2011, two years after Reynolds made his debut as Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, implying that he should have been prevented from playing Hal Jordan. Reynolds, on the other hand, made his Marvel debut in 2004 as Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity. The House of Ideas, on the other hand, has a considerably stronger claim to the actor than DC does.

It's worth noting that neither Tapper nor host Conan O'Brien are taking this discussion seriously, with both showering accolades on Ryan Reynolds for his Deadpool performance. Even still, let us know in the comments whether you believe that performers shouldn't be able to jump across realms.
